Amritsar train accident: CM Amarinder Singh meets patients undergoing treatment

Nearly 16 hours after at least 60 people were crushed to death by a train while watching the burning of a Ravana effigy in Amritsar, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh arrived here and visited several hospitals.

After arriving in Amritsar on Saturday morning, CM Amarinder Singh met district officials and the crises management team over the relief operations performed following the mishap. He also visited Amandeep Hospital and Civil Hospital to meet the patients undergoing treatment at the medical facilities.

In a tweet, he said, “Was briefed by the district officials and the crises management team about the #AmritsarTrainAccident and the relief operations on arrival at Amritsar airport. Going on to visit the injured in various hospitals.”

Meanwhile, the Punjab government ordered a state mourning on Saturday.

Notably, on Friday evening, Dussehra celebrations turned into tragedy after a festive crowd that was watching the Ravan effigy were ran over by a speeding passenger train in Joda Phatak near Amritsar. At least 61 people were killed and 72 were injured in the unfortunate incident.

Soon after the incident, MoS, Railways, Manoj Sinha, visited the spot late at night. The train driver, whose identity is withheld, is being questioned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already announced Rs 2 lakh for the family of dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
