The incident took place in the fifth ball of the 18th over when Pandya – who was bowling the over – fell to the ground holding his hip. The 24-year-old seemed to have suffered a serious back injury and it is believed that he sustained the injury after he slipped during the follow-through while delivering a ball.

He was surrounded by his teammates as well as the Pakistani batting duo of Shoaib Malik (43) and Babar Azam (47), who were batting at the time the incident occurred. The physio assessed his condition before deciding to carry him off. Ambati Rayudu bowled the last ball of the over.

The injury was, however, confirmed to be an ‘acute lower back injury’ by the Board Cricket Control of India in a post on Twitter.

“Injury update – @hardikpandya7 has an acute lower back injury. He is able to stand at the moment and the medical team is assessing him now. Manish Pandey is on the field as his substitute #TeamIndia #AsiaCup,” wrote the cricket board.

Pakistan were bowled out for a paltry 162 in their innings in 43.1 overs with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (15/3) and Kedar Jadhav (23/3) taking three wickets each to dismantle the Pakistan batting order. Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two and one wickets respectively.

Earlier, Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and choose to bat first. His decision, however, proved to be a mistake as Kumar dismissed both the openers Imam-ul-Haq (2) and Fakhar Zaman for a golden duck to reduce the opposition to 3/2 at the end of 4.1 overs.

But the 82-run partnership between Zaman and Malik, combined with late handy contributions from Faheem Ashraf (21) and Mohammad Amir (18) somehow propelled Pakistan to 162.

At the time of writing India were cruising to a comfortable victory, having scored 85 runs in the in 13 overs. Openers Rohit Sharma was batting on 51, while Shikhar Dhawan remained not out on 31.
