Asian Games 2018: Sudha Singh, Dharun Ayyasamy wins silver in athletics

32-year-old Indian long-distance runner Sudha Singh clinched a silver in the women’s 3000m steeplechase event in Jakarta on Sunday.

Sudha clocked 9 minutes and 40.43 seconds to finish behind Winfred Yavi of Bahrain and claim her second Asian Games medal after the gold in 2010.

Bahrain’s Yavi clocked 9 minutes 36.52 seconds to win the gold, while Thi Oanh Nguyen of Vietnam bagged the bronze after finishing with a 9m 43.83 seconds.

The veteran athlete has a personal best of 9m 26.55s, while her seasonal best came during the National Inter-State Championships in June where she clocked 9 minutes and 39.59 seconds. In 2010, Sudha had clinched the gold in the same event after finishing the 3000m steeplechase event in 9m 55.67s.

Meanwhile, Dharun Ayyasamy clinched the silver in the men’s 400m hurdles to take India’s medal tally to 38 at the 18th Asian Games.

He clocked a timing of 48.96 seconds to finish behind Qatar’s Samba Abderrahman, who claimed the gold medal with a timing of 47.66. Abe Takatoshi of Japan settled for the bronze medal bronze having finished with a timing of 49.12.

In the process, Dharun also broke his personal best record of 49.45 seconds, which he had achieved during the Federation Cup in March.

The silver was India first medal in the 400m event after Joseph Abraham’s gold in 2010. It was also the fourth medal in Athletics even for India at the 2018 Asian Games.
