The deceased are yet to be identified, said a police officer as quoted by news agency PTI.

The grenade, which exploded at a hardware shop in the Demow area of the Sivasagar district, killed one person while also injuring several others. Another critically injured person succumbed to his injuries later, added a report in the news agency.

A senior police officer told the agency that they suspect that the explosion was the deed of the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) militants. Several people were injured in the explosion.

Meanwhile, it was the second attack in three weeks by the suspected militants. Just days ago, the ULFA (I) militants had slaughtered five people in the Sadiya area of the Tinsukia district.

Reportedly, six youngsters were picked up by a group of armed men from outside a shop. They were then taken the banks of the Brahmaputra River, where they were made to sit in a single line vertically and shot dead.

Rumours are also doing the rounds that the people shot dead were mostly Bengalis. The ULFA(I) is suspected to instigate a conflict between the Bengalis and Assamese following the implementation of NRC in the state.
