Shaw had an awkward landing on his left ankle during India’s practice match against Cricket Australia XI and had to be carried out of the field with a face grimacing in pain.

He was subsequently ruled out of the first Test in Adelaide.

Shaw had made headlines during his debut against the West Indies where he became the youngest to score a Test century and has often invited comparisons with the great Sachin Tendulkar. His injured ankle was seen with a protective brace on as he jogged around the sidelines.

He still is unlikely to feature in the second Test match which is slated to be played in Perth. He would possibly return to the playing XI in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

“With youth on his side there might just be a case where he might recover quicker,” said India head coach Ravi Shastri.

“We’ll make a call as and when we get closer to Perth, ” he added. The young opener was highly certain to feature in the playing XI in Adelaide but the untimely injury to his ankle ruled him out. KL Rahul and Murali Vijay opened the innings in his absence.
