Veteran Ollywood actor Bijay Mohanty breathed his last at a private hospital in Odisha on Monday. He was 70. Bijay one of the most recognizable faces of the Odia cinema passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

As reported by sources to NEWS 18, Mohanty was in Hyderabad where his daughter resides. The veteran actor was diagnosed with diabetes and underwent a minor surgery a few months ago. He was admitted to a Hyderabad hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest in May. On his request, he was brought back to Bhubaneswar from Hyderabad in June.

The actor passed away on July 20 at a private hospital in the capital city of Odisha. He is survived by his wife, Tandra Ray, also an actress, and a daughter.

Bijay Mohanty made a foray into Ollywood in 1977 with Nagaphasa. The 1978 movie of his Chilika Tire won the National Award for that year. His other notable films include Arati, Mamata Mage Mula, Aei Aama Sansara, Aama Ghara Aama Sansara Bhai Hela Bhagari, Laxman Rekha, Rakhi Bhijigala Akhi Luhare and I Love My India.

He had also directed the movie Bhuli Huena. He was conferred with the Jayadev Award in 2014. A former student of the National School of Drama, Mohanty is credited with introducing layered negative characters in the Odia film industry.

He also contested for the Bhubanewsar Lok Sabha seat in 2014 general election on Congress ticket, but lost.
