BJP leader Chander Mohan Gupta was elected the Mayor of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Thursday. Soon after being elected to the post, Gupta vowed to work for the winter capital of Jammu to make it one of the best cities in the country.

“My first priority will be to make Jammu one of the beautiful cities of the country and a better place for the residents,” Gupta was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Another BJP leader Purnima Sharma was elected the deputy mayor of the JMC. The saffron brigade swept the polls and bagged 43 wards of the total 75 to stake claim for the JMC office. The Urban Local Bodies polls took place in four phases in between October 8 and 16 after a recess of 13 years.
Gupta, en route to this resounding victory, garnered 45 votes and defeated his nearest rival and Congress candidate Vijay Choudhary who could only manage 30 votes against his name. This is Gupta’s second victory from ward no 33.
“I am from RSS background where it is taught to take every one along without any discrimination,” Gupta was quoted by the news agency.
Gupta looked determined to get the desired results by implementing the smart city project. ”We will make water bodies and place shikara (boats) for sightseeing. Cycling tracks and malls will also be part of the smart city project,” he said.
Newly elected deputy Mayor, Purnima Sharma mustered 48 votes to get the better of her Congress rival Charanjeet Kour.
Several BJP leaders, which included state president Ravinder Raina, feted the winners and later brought out victory rallies all over the state. “Today, the lotus (symbol of BJP) is blooming in all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir which in because of the people who have reposed faith in the party given its policies, development work and the achievements made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government over the past four-and-a-half years,” Raina said.
