Real Madrid sweep UEFA awards as Modric named men’s player of the year

Real Madrid and Croatia star Luka Modric bagged the UEFA men’s player of the year award, surpassing the likes of former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Egypt’s Mohammad Salah.

The midfielder had a pivotal role to play in Real Madrid’s third Champions League title in a row as he also guided Croatia to the final of the football World Cup in Russia, a month ago.

Modric was given the Golden Ball for his exceptional performance throughout the event in Russia.

However, it was his club Real Madrid, which swept through the awards on the night. Goalkeeper Keylor Navas was named the UEFA Champions League goalkeeper of the season while club captain and centre-back Sergio Ramos won the UEFA Defender of the season.

Ronaldo, a former Real Madrid star pipped the likes of Salah and Lionel Messi to clinch the UEFA Forward ff the season.

The UEFA women’s player of the year was given to Pernille Harder of Wolfsburg.

Former England and Manchester United stalwart David Beckham was also awarded on the night in Monaco as he received the 2018 UEFA award for ‘outstanding achievements, professional excellence and exemplary personal qualities.

The inaugural #Equalgame award went to San Jose Earthquakes defender Guram Kashia for showing his support for the LGBTQ community last season.
