Gangubai Kathiawadi: Alia Bhatt Reveals Theatrical Release Date For SLB Directorial

Alia Bhatt will be seen portraying the role of Gangubai from Kathiawadi in her upcoming film. It is helmed by ace filmmaker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and it also reportedly features Emraan Hashmi. Amidst the pandemic COVID-19 restrictions, the theatrical giants suffered losses because of being completely shut. Days after the Maharashtra government officially announced allowing cinema halls to re-open, the makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi announce updated release date. This upcoming film to premiere in January.

Sharing the news with her fans, Alia Bhatt took her Instagram handle. She shared a poster of Gangubai Kathiawadi and unveiled the new release date. “Bringing to you a part of my heart & soul, #GangubaiKathiawadi releasing in cinemas near you on 6th January, 2022 🤍🌕,” she captioned the announcement post.

Team Gangubai Kathiawadi faced several obstacles while shooting the film. Last year due to heavy rains and cyclone in Maharashtra, the shooting set was heavily affected which reportedly caused hefty loss to makers. On the other side, the shoots were also paused several times due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The film was initially slated to be released on July 30, 2021. It is touted to be loosely based on popular book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S. Hussain Zaidi. It takes us to the real life story of girl named Gangubai from Kathiawad, who becomes one of the most powerful and respected madams from Kamathipura during the 1960s.
