Mumbai: Security beefed up ahead of Ganpati Visarjan

Ten days long festival is about to end, from small to big, home to pandal all Ganesha idol will be immersed today in the ocean. As you know the process is called Ganpati Visarjan. On the occasion of Ganpati Visarjan, Mumbaikar faces huge traffic snarls and congestion. As the city alone will witness the immersion of over 150,000 Ganesh idol.

Ahead of Anant Chaturthi, Mumbai Police has beefed up the security and deployed 52,000 police personnel to look after the 162 immersion points in Mumbai. Apart from CCTV cameras, the Mumbai Police is all set to monitor the Ganpati Visarjan through drones, which have been deployed at Girgaum Chowpatty, Juhu Chowpatty, Lalbaug and Shivaji Park.

According to the report, 3200 traffic Police and more than 1500 traffic warden have been deployed around the city. The four major control rooms have also set up near immersion spots like Girgaum Chowpatty, Juhu Chowpatty, Shivaji Park, Ganesh Ghat in Powai and Bada Masjid in Bandra. The Mumbai police reported having sought help from swimmers, lifeguards, and the coast guard to avoid any drowning during the Ganpati Visarjan immersion process.”

Ganpati Visarjan“A staggering 6455 Sarvajanik Ganesh pandals will be conducting the visarjan on September 23. 53 roads have been closed for vehicular traffic, 56 roads are one-way while 99 roads are no parking spots. No heavy vehicles will be allowed on 18 roads in Mumbai,” reported mid-day.

Taking microblogging site Twitter, Mumbai Police has been updating Mumbaikars about the latest traffic developments and routes of Ganesh Visarjan in Mumbai. The handle yesterday tweeted a nostalgic video of Ganpati Visarjan and police bandobast in olden times. The tweeted: While farewell to Ganpati has always been extremely emotional and special for citizens, for us the focus has always been ensuring their safety during the festivity! A glimpse of Ganpati Visarjan and police bandobast in olden times.

“Despite the challenges, we are absolutely ready. Efforts for the planning of bandobast have been increased. Sufficient deployment and highest level review has been undertaken in case we need to deal with unforseen events or incidents on the final day. We are ready and our arrangements are meticulous. Anti-terror cells of all police stations have been activated. I urge people to dial 100, or tweet to us or use the WhatsApp helpline number of Mumbai Police in case of any emergency. We request people to not respond to rumours without verifying,” Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Manjunath Shinge told DNA.
