George Harrison’s Material World Foundation Donates Half a Million to COVID-19 Relief
George Harrison established the foundation in 1973.
George Harrison’s Material World Foundation donated $500,000 to COVID-19 relief. The funds were donated to MusiCare’s COVID-19 Foundation, Save the Children, and Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders). The foundation was established by George Harrison in 1973.
In addition, the foundation has also launched “The Inner Light Challenge”. Users across the world can shared a line, verse, or chorus from the Beatles’ 1968 B side. George Harrison’s Material World Foundation will donate one dollar to pandemic relief for every person who posts the clip with the hashtag #innerlight2020. A maximum of $100,000 will be donated.
According to Material World’s website, “Material World Foundation will donate another $1 (up to $100,000) for every one of you who shares their own ‘Inner Light’ moment on social media using the hashtag #innerlight2020. This can be a verse, a chorus or a line from the song. Sing it, play it, hum it, strum it, paint it, knit it, chant it, plant it, pray or meditate and post it to social media.”
Dhani, son of The Beatles legend, covered “The Inner Light” in a clip. The song lyrics are particularly poignant for the current hour.
“Without going out of my door/I can know all things on earth
Without looking out of my window/I could know the ways of heaven.”
“These lyrics sung by George are a positive reminder to all of us who are isolating, in quarantine, or respecting the request to shelter in place,” Harrison’s widow, Olivia, said in a statement. “Let’s get and stay connected at this difficult time. There are things we can do to help, and we invite you to share your Inner Light.”
