Gujarat: Minor girls commit suicide after being raped, consume pesticide

A 17-year-old girl attempted suicide, along with her friend, after she was allegedly raped by her friends relative near Bodeli in Gujarat’s Chhota Udepur district on Monday. The incident took place on Thursday after which the girl consumed pesticide out of fear.

Informing more about the incident, Bodeli police official said that the victims were approached by two persons — Sajanbhai Naika and Rohit Naika —  while they were returning from school on Thursday and persuaded them to accompany them to a temple nearby.

Elaborating more, the police officer said, as quoted by the NDTV, “While the victim sat on Sajanbhai’s two-wheeler, her friend rode pillion on Rohit’s motorcycle. En route, while Rohit rode ahead with the friend, Sajanbhai took the victim to an isolated spot out of town and raped her at knife-point.”

The police officer further added that after the alleged crime, the accused dropped to the two girls at Bodeli where they consumed pesticide out of fear. Soon they were rushed to the government hospital in the area and then shifted to Vadodara civil hospital in a critical condition.

Informing about the case being lodged after the official statement, the police officer further added, “At Vadodara civil hospital, the victim gave a statement to police revealing the incident that took place on Thursday and the subsequent sequence of events following which we registered a case yesterday.”

Among the case that has been charged on Sajanbhai by the police include — rape and criminal intimidation under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code. Also, Rohit Naika has been charged under section 114 (abettor present when an offence is committed) of the IPC. Both the accused are absconding and police have launched a manhunt for them.
