Gujarat Mob Lynching: One injured, one killed on suspicion of being robbers

Another instance of mob lynching, an issue that seems to be on the rise, has come into the fore at a village in the tribal-dominated Dahod district of Gujarat where one person died on the spot and another was grievously injured after a mob beat up the two suspected robbers on Saturday night.

The villagers of Kali Mahudi village, where the incident took place, maintained that a band of about 20 persons attacked their village with the intention of robbery after which they retorted and managed to catch hold of two of them, who were then mercilessly beaten up while the others managed to flee.

The deceased Ajmal Vahoniya, aged 22, was a resident of Undaar village of Dahod district. His supposed accomplice who has been injured has been identified as Bharu Mathur of Ambali Khajuriya village of Dahod.

Meanwhile, the villagers, according to Limdi police sub-inspector Pravin Jundal made claims of the retort whilst adding that, “The investigation is underway and we are verifying the veracity of the claims. A case of murder has been registered against the mob and arrests will be made soon. We are yet to verify the claims of the villagers and why had Vahoniya and Mathur come to the village. Both the victims were released from jail a few days ago and have cases of theft as well as rioting against them,” Jundal added. A case has also been registered against the mob.

CNN-News 18 reported an officer as saying,”The police reached the spot immediately after getting information of the crime and has shifted one grievously injured person to the hospital. A case of murder has been registered and attempts are on to identify the persons involved in the lynching. Both the deceased and the injured person had criminal cases pending against them.”

Cases of mob lynching have increasingly taken hold of the nation with the most recent case being that of a 28-year-old Rakbar Khan who was allegedly lynched to death in Alwar merely on the suspicion of smuggling cows.
