Kanhaiya Kumar to contest Lok Sabha polls from Begusarai constituency in Bihar

Former Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the Begusarai constituency of Bihar, reported TOI on Friday.

The 31-year-old, who rose to prominence during the 2016 agitation in the Jawaharlal Nehru University where he was arrested by the Delhi police on charges of sedition, will contest the elections as a common candidate of the “Mahagathbandhan” (a grand alliance, which comprises of RJD, Congress, NCP, HAM (S), Loktantrik Janata Dal of Sharad Yadav and other left parties).

According to a report in the national daily, RJD president Lalu Prasad and his son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav along with the Congress leadership of the state have decided to vacate the seat Begusarai seat for Kanhaiya.

The former JNUSU chief, who is also the leader of the All India Students Federation of the CPIM is a native of the Begusarai district. His village falls in the Bihat panchyat of the Barauni block in the constituency.

His mother Meena Devi is an anganwadi sewika in the same district, while his father Jayashankar Singh, who is a farmer is currently bed-ridden.

Kanhaiya will officially contest the election as a CPIM candidate.
