Mumbai: Wadala Landslide At Dosti Acres

This morning, a huge section of a wall at an high-end Mumbai complex slumped down along with minimum 15 parked cars after heavy rain was experienced in Mumbai. The visual was fearful as all the cars got buried under the base or stuck in detritus.

As soon as firemen reached to the emergency, along with other civic bodies an entire wing of the building was vacated. The wing has houses of bankers and businessmen. Everyone is safe and all the residents are safe, as reported by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell.

It was informed by the residents of complex that while some residents are still inside the complex, many others have temporarily moved in with friends and relatives. They are waiting for the structural engineer’s clearance just to be safe.

One of the resident also narrated the incident saying, “It has been raining continuously and around 4 this morning, there was a deafening sound and the boundary wall of our complex came crashing. After that the road where we park our cars caved in. It was almost like a landslide and 15-20 cars went down with it”.

It is predicted that the construction work next door weakened the boundary wall of the parking area, which gave away in the rain.

Since Sunday, 24th June 2018, Mumbai has received 231.4 mm rain according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). So much rainfall is categorised as extremely heavy showers, IMD’s Mumbai Director Ajay Kumar told news agency Press Trust of India.

Further he added, “This is the first extremely heavy rainfall recorded in Mumbai in the current season. The rain intensity has gone up since yesterday afternoon and is expected to continue further”.

In the time span of 24 hours several people has fallen pray to the rainfall. The downpour led to water-logging in subways in suburbs of Andheri, Khar and Malad, severely impacting the rush hour traffic. A container broke down on a bridge on the Eastern Express Highway, which also put the traffic in the slow lane.

The Mumbai Police said they are prepared. “The showers are heavy but so is our ‘bandobast’ on the streets to ‘be there’ for Mumbaikars. We are #AlwaysUpForDuty to help you reach your destination with a little care & caution from you during your journey #RoadSafety #MumbaiRains,” the official handle tweeted.
