Muzaffarpur shelter case: Brajesh Thakur cries foul, points to political vendetta

After lodging an FIR on May 31, police arrested prime accused Brajesh Thakur on June 2 but failed to get his custody from the court. The court had then sent him to judicial custody. His bail plea was earlier rejected by Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court. Brajesh Thakur’s wife too was arrested in connection with the case as she disclosed the names of minor victims on social media.

Brajesh Thakur, the mastermind behind the horrific sexual exploitation scandal of minor girls at the Muzaffarpur shelter home, dabbled in politics for several years, but was unsuccessful. He has alleged again that his name is maligned by the rival news agency whose intent is to bring down his company and libel his political reputation. He also asserted that he is a victim of political vendetta and none of the girls would ever take his name for this heinous crime.

The case came to light when one of the victims at the Muzaffarpur Shelter had accused Brajesh Thakur of exploiting the girls physically, mentally and sexually. The heinous and inhuman conduct continued previously for seven months. Based on the social audit report, submitted by Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Bihar Social Welfare Department filed an FIR.

According to the social audit report many girls were sexually abused at the shelter home and were physically assaulted, if complained. A special team has been formed for a fair inquiry and the girl have been transferred to shelter homes in Patna and Madhubani. Brajesh, used to force the girls to have sexual relations with several men, thereby operating the shelter as a brothel.

A native of Pachdahi village under Sakra Police station of Muzaffarpur, Brajesh has worked persistently to build his empire that comprises of three news agencies that are run by his son and daughter and a network of shelter homes.

He still enjoyed clout in political circles, as is evident by the government contracts he bagged, both for his NGOs and the newspapers.

Previously, one girl of the 14 girls who were rescued went missing and the in-charge of the NGO in Madhubani, Pragya Bharti, attributed the loss to security lapse.
