On Monday, US television network NBC announced canceling Golden Globes for next year amid widespread backlash received by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. For the uninitiated, HFPA is the institution behind the Golden Globe awards.

NBC issued an official statement, that read as: “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform, However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The announcement comes after the top-flight film and TV companies, including Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia, withdrew themselves from the HFPA and the Globes in recent days. The members of HFPA have also been accused of making sexist and racist remarks and seeking favors from celebrities and studios.

As a sign of protest, superstar Tom Cruise returned his three Globes for “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Jerry Maguire,” according to Variety.

The Globes are the main source of income for the HFPA.

Soon after NBC’s statement emerged on the internet, many Twitter users were left abuzz. While many come in support of the decision made by the television network, however, others suspected the real reason behind the decision to be Golden Globes’ low ratings.
