PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy thumped out of Indonesian Open

PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy lost their respective quarterfinal matches at the Indonesia Open badminton tournament in Jakarta on Friday. PV Sindhu lost to eighth seed He Bingjiao from China whereas HS Prannoy lost to Chinese third seed Shi Yuqi. The Indian challenge came to an end at the $1.25 million Indonesia Open as both PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy lost in straight games at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno on Friday.

Chinese eighth seed He Bingjiao defeated Third seed Sindhu by 14-21, 15-21 in 37 minutes in her women’s singles last eight clash of the BWF World Tour Super 1000 event. This was her first victory against PV Sindhu since April 2007 World and sixth victory overall in 11 meetings.

Sindhu has failed to win a tournament in 2018 despite reaching finals of two tournaments. She was defeated by Saina Nehwal in the Commonwealth Games final in April and she went down to American Beiwen Zhang at the Indian Open in February.

HS Prannoy had to face the same fate when he played against Chinese third seed Shi Yuqi in the men’s quarter final. He lost 21-17, 21-18 to the Chinese that brought his Indonesian open challenge to an end. Prannoy’s only win over the Chinese came two years back at Badminton Asia Team Championships in Hyderabad. Apart from that outing, the Indian has lost all four games against Shi Yuqi.

Both PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy showed great fight in their respective matches but lost in straight sets. PV Sindhu matched the Chinese in both games till tenth point but from there on He Bingjiao outplayed the Hyderabadi on both occasions. Meanwhile, In the men’s quarter final Prannoy looked efficient in rallies against the opponent but where he lacked was the finishing touches that brought about his downfall in just 39 minutes.
