“Gautam has intimated the state team’s chief selector Amit Bhandari that he would like to opt out of captaincy. He suggested that someone younger be groomed for the job. Nitish Rana will lead the side and Dhruv Shorey will be his deputy,” said a senior official of the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association as quoted by PTI.

The senior southpaw also confirmed this development in a tweet where he wrote, “Time to pass the captaincy baton to youngsters, hence have requested the DDCA selectors not to consider me for that role. I will be in the background helping the new leader to win games @RajatSharmaLive.”

He would be replaced by Nitish Rana at the helm. Rana has an average of 46.29 in 24 first-class matches. Shorey, a top-order batsman in the meantime has an experience of 21 matches.

The squad is scheduled to be named later on Monday ahead of Delhi’s first match at the Feroz Shah Kotla on November 12. Gambhir had a wonderful season so far with Delhi as he led to the finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy after being handed the captaincy and even scored almost 500 runs in the entire competition.

But there remains uncertainty over the fact whether Gambhir’s decision of giving up the captaincy means he would retire soon or not. The 37-year old earlier had relinquished the captaincy of IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils after he made a comeback to the team on the back of a lot of success for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
