A hip injury has ruled Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin out of a return to Worcestershire.

Chief executive of the club, Matt Rawnsley while talking about Ashwin’s injury, said that it was a ‘shame’ that the off-spinner had to miss two Championship games in September and wished him a speedy recovery.

“It’s a shame Ravichandran Ashwin will not be able to return to us because he made such a big impact here in 2017 and was keen to come back. He has gone on record about how much he enjoyed it here last summer,” he said.

He added, “But the injury he has been struggling with in the Test series against England means that it is not possible and we wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. We are exploring our options for an overseas replacement for the final two Championship matches.”

Ashwin’s injury worsened further in Southampton during the fourth Test match. In that match, the Tamil Nadu tweaker received a lot of criticism for not being able to take wickets on a spin-friendly pitch. Comparisons were made between him and England off-spinner Moeen Ali who put up a game-changing performance in the match to walk away with the player of the match award and also ensure England won the series.

Ashwin had a perfect start to the Test series when he bagged seven wickets in the very first match. But just four wickets in the next three matches spelled a poor outing for him and he was eventually benched for the ongoing fifth Test match due to the hip injury.
