Serie A: Ronaldo becomes league’s top-scorer in Juventus’ 2-1 victory over SPAL

Cristiano Ronaldo shot his way into the Serie A top-scoring charts with another timely strike in Juventus’ 2-0 victory over SPAL. The league champions continued their unbeaten streak and are at the top with 37 points after 13 games with a record 12 victories.

Ronaldo reacted first to Miralem Pjanic’s free-kick in the 28th minute to break the deadlock with a left-footed finish and put Juventus 1-0 ahead after the opening goal had been disallowed for a foul. The Portuguese star also became the first player since Pietro Anastasi in 1968-69 to score nine goals in his first 13 league games for the Italy giants.

Juventus are on top and has so far collected 37 out of the possible 39 points and are nine points ahead of the second-placed Napoli ahead of their match against Chievo.

Earlier, Juventus looked to have taken the lead just 10 minutes into the contest when SPAL defender Felipe deflected a Diego Costa cross into the net but the referee disallowed the goal after adjudging Mario Mandzukic to intruded SPAL goalkeeper Alfred Gomis in his goal-kick to the build-up of the goal.

The former Croatia national – Juventus’ captain for the night – would eventually add to his team’s tally from another of Costa’s shot, which was parried into his path by a Gomis save after Ronaldo had found the Brazilian following a brilliant run on the left flank.

Ronaldo himself should have doubled his goal tally in the final few minutes of the match but while Gomis parried away his long-distance shot, the Portuguese striker fired wide from close range in the next best chance.

Juventus along with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are the only three sides to score in every league game this season among teams in Europe’s top five leagues.
