West Indies pacer Shannon Gabriel was handed a match ban after he collected five demerit points within a period of 24 months for issues with his discipline, as said by the International Cricket Council on Friday. He was also fined 30 per cent of his match fee.

The burly speedster shouldered Bangladesh batsman Imrul Kayes during the opening day of the first Test match as a result of which he accumulated two demerit points.

It all happened in the eighth over of the Bangladeshi innings when Gabriel made a physical contact with Kayes while in his follow-through.

A statement by the ICC read, “In the opinion of the umpires, this physical contact was avoidable.”

Earlier, Gabriel had collected three demerit points during the Test match against Pakistan last year in Jamaica. He had also been fined 50 per cent of his match fee also.

But now with two more demerit points, he has collected four points which in turn becomes two suspension points.

The two suspension points result in a ban from one Test or two ODIs or T20Is based on their order of arrival. Thus Gabriel would miss the second Test which is scheduled to be played from November 30 to December 4 in Dhaka.

The right-arm quick bowler was the best for the visitors as he triggered a late collapse on the first day as he ended with figures of 4/70.
