Sheila Dikshit — Former Chief Minister of Delhi and Senior Congress leader — breathed her last on 20th July 2019. According to reports, Sheila Dikshit died of Cardiac arrest and at the time of her death, she was 81-years old. The former Delhi CM cremated today with full state honours at the national capital’s oldest cremation ground, Nigambodh Ghat.

According to reports, she was laid to rest using the CNG method as she had wished for the same. Hundreds of people joined in for the Congress senior leader’s last journey from the party headquarters to Nigambodh Ghat. With her smiling photograph in front, a truck decked up with white flowers carried her mortal remains as supporters bid a tearful adieu to their leader.

Apart from hundreds of supporters, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia were present for the last rites.

Earlier today, The body of Sheila Dikshit has been brought to Congress headquarter in Delhi to pay her last respect. The last rites of former Delhi CM will be taken place on the banks of the Yamuna, at around 2:30 pm today.

Ever since the news of Sheila Dikshit’s demise broke, Politicians and celebrities are offering their condolences to her family. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Sushma Swaraj and LK Advani and National Conference’s Omar Abdullah were among the leaders who went to the Nizamuddin home of the former Delhi Chief Minister to pay her last respect.

When the body of Sheila Dikshit arrived at Congress headquarters, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh offered their last tributes as the funeral procession prepared to move on to Nigam Bodh Ghat.

The Delhi government has declared a two-day state mourning for Sheila Dikshit’s death. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Twitter.

According to reports, Sheila Dikshit was admitted to Fortis Escorts hospital in a critical condition on Saturday. She died at 3.55 pm on Saturday, her family members said. The hospital, in a statement, said despite all resuscitative efforts, Sheila Dikshit died after a cardiac arrest.

“A multi-disciplinary team of doctors, led by Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, carried out the advanced resuscitative measures. Her condition stabilised temporarily. However, she had another cardiac arrest and despite all the resuscitative efforts, passed away at 3:55 pm on 20th of July 2019,” Fortis said in a statement.

Sheila Dikshit had served as Delhi’s chief minister for 15-years between 1998 and 2013. She was succeeded by Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal.
