Banned Australian captain Steve Smith has been ruled out of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with an abdominal tear. A member of the Barbados Tridents squad said, Smith couldn’t take part in his team’s match against St. Lucia stars.

“He had a slight tear and he had to go back, so it’s a really unfortunate situation,” said Robin Singh, captain of the Barbados Tridents’ team, as quote by The Indian Express.

But despite the injury, Smith is expected to make a comeback to Australian domestic cricket this month for the New South Wales. Despite being banned from representing NSW, Smith would be seen in the Sutherland jersey on September 22, according to information from Cricket Australia’s official website.

Initially drafted in as a replacement for Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al-Hasan, Smith amassed 185 runs in seven outings for the Tridents. He also proved handy with his leg-spin, taking three wickets.

Smith was handed a 12-month ban from international cricket after he along with teammates David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were found to be tampering with the ball during Australia’s Test match against South Africa in Cape Town.
