Virat Kohli joined Virender Sehwag as the fourth India batsmen to score the highest number of Test centuries following his 23rd Test ton on Day 3 of the third Test against England at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.

The Indian captain, who put behind the demons of 2014, with two centuries and 400+ runs in the ongoing Test series in England is fourth in the list of highest Indian Test centuries scored, behind Sachin Tendulkar (51), Rahul Dravid (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (34).

After a disastrous 2014 England tour, Kohli began the Test series this time with a master-class 149 before hitting another 103 at Trent Bridge. The Indian skipper with an average of 73.33 in the series has so far scored 440 runs. He was also the World BNo.1 Test batsman before losing the position to disgraced former Australian captain Steve Smith. But if Kohli continues with the same form for the rest of the Test series, he may well regain the top ranking.

He could have well had another Test century to his name but missed it by three agonizing runs in the first innings of the ongoing Test match, getting out on 97 while trying to drive an Adil Rashid googly.

The visitors powered by Kohli’s 93 and Ajinkya Rahane’s 81 made 329 in the first innings before bundling England out for 161. With a healthy lead of 168, India then made another giant score of 352, to set England the near-improbable target of 520 runs with two days still left to play. Kohli made 103 while Cheteshwar Pujara (72) and Hardik Pandya (52) made half-centuries in the second innings. Pandya had earlier also taken a five-wicket haul.

England is currently facing defeat at 311/9 with a day’s play and 210 runs remaining. Jasprit Bumrah has been the chief wrecker with five-wickets.
