The defeat of Venus Williams against 26-year-old Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens came as a surprise to everyone. The Five time Wimbledon champion was beaten 6-2, 6-7(5-7), 8-6 by the opponent. It has been a jinx for majority of the top seeded players in race to the Wimbledon title as eight of the top 10 seeds in the women’s singles have now failed to make it through to the last 16.

“Some of it is players not having a plan B, or plan C. You have to somehow find a way to win on those days when you are not at your best and some of the top players just haven’t been able to do that.”, former Australian Open semi-finalist Chanda Rubin said.

The top seed champion Roger Federer had no problem whatsoever. He played with flair and easily conquered Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff on Centre Court. He completed the much predicted win in 94 minutes clinching his place against Adrian Mannarino in the next round. Adriano himself showed great fight against Daniil Sergeyevich Medvedev as he had to come from behind in the fifth set to make it through to the last 16.

The Swiss extended his winning streak to 29 in a row without dropping a set in this year’s Wimbledon.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams displayed the same performance as Roger Federer by not dropping even a single set this year. And with eight of the top 10 women’s seeds vanishing from Wimbledon, the path seems clear for an eighth Wimbledon title.

She defeated France’s Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 7-6(7-2) despite going a break down in the first set.

“Just getting to the round of 16 twice is not bad. Hopefully I can do a little bit better. I don’t have anything to lose. I have absolutely nothing to prove.”, she said.
