Eight patients have died after a huge fire broke out in the ICU of a private COVID-19 designated hospital in Ahmedabad. The shocking incident took place early Thursday morning. The blaze was reportedly caused by an electrical short-circuit.

As reported by sources to PTI, The fire was reported at the Shrey Hospital in the Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad. The blaze started at around 3:30 am on Thursday. The victims include five men and three women. Around 35 patients at the facility were rescued. They were moved to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths in his home state. He tweeted, “Saddened by the tragic hospital fire in Ahmedabad. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to CM @vijayrupanibjp Ji and Mayor @ibijalpatel Ji regarding the situation. The administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected (sic).”

The PMO office tweeted that, Ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the hospital fire in Ahmedabad. Rs. 50,000 each would be given to those injured.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an investigation into the incident. Additional Chief Secretary (Home Department) Sangeeta Singh, will be leading the probe.
