On this glorious day, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat paid tribute at Amar Jawan Jyoti in the national capital. In a tweet, Indian Army spokesperson said, “General Bipin Rawat #COAS and all ranks of #IndianArmy convey best wishes to all ranks of #Infantry on the occasion of 72nd Infantry Day.”

Notably, on this day in 1947, an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribal who was supported by the Pakistani Army.

This action was ordered by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession acceding Jammu and Kashmir to India. To commemorate their success this day is celebrated every year across India. Also on this day in 1947, India as an independent nation was first time engaged in operations against an aggressor.
