Asian Games 2018: India win two bronze and a silver in sailing

India added more glitter to its medal tally after winning three more medals in the sailing event of the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta on Friday.

Varsha Gautham and Sweta Shervegar teamed together to win the silver medal and Harshita Tomar claimed the bronze in the women’s events, while the combination of Varun Thakkar Ashok and Chengappa Ganapathy Kelapanda settled for bronze in the men’s category to ensure India of three medals in the sailing event.

The pair of Varsha and Sweta competing in the 49er FX women’s event scores a total of 40 after completing 15 races to finish second behind Indonesia’s pair and win the silver.

Meanwhile, the pair of Ashok and Kelapanda won the bronze after scoring 53 following 15 races in the men’s 49er event.

A 16-year-old Harshita, who competed in the in the Open Laser 4.7 event managed to score 62 on the completion of 12 races to finish third and clinch the bronze.

“It is a great feeling to win a medal for the country. I can’t explain it. It has been a great learning experience for me,” said the 16-year-old former swimmer.

Among the other Indians in the fray, Govind Bairagi came fourth in the men’s Open Laser 4.7 event, while Nethra Kumanan finished fifth in the Laser Radial Sailing event.

India has so far won 65 medals, which includes 13 gold, 23 silver, and 29 bronze medals. They had won 57 medals in the previous edition at Incheon in 2014.
