Asian Games 2018: Lakshay Sheoran wins silver in men’s shooting event

Young shooter Lakshay Sheoran bagged India’s fourth medal at the 2018 Asian Games by winning a silver in the Men’s Trap shooting event in Jakarta on Monday. It also was the shooting contingent’s third medal of the competition the season.

Lakshay, 19, finished with 39 from 45 shots to win his maiden Asiad medal coming second just five points behind gold medallist Yang Kunpi of Chinese Taipei.

Veteran shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu, however, finished fourth to miss out on a medal. Sandhu had topped the qualification round with a score of 119 excluding the 12 he earned in the shootout, while Lakshay came fourth with the same score but none in the shootout.

He bounced back in the final beginning in an excellent manner, hitting 14 out of 15 shots on target in the first period, while Sandhu finished with 11, missing three targets out of his 15 shots.

It, however, did not deter his progress and soon Sandhu surged ahead to move at-par with Lakshay – both tied for the second spot with 21 points after 25 shots. They continued and five shots later India were assured of a medal as both Lakshay and Sandhu made it to the final four.

The 19-year-old then consolidated his second position even as Sadhu lost his plot to eventually finish fourth and miss the bronze by a whisker.

Earlier, in the day Deepak Kumar had clinched the silver medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event while Purvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar had won bronze in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event on Sunday, to make it three medals in total for the shooting contingent.
