Kerala floods: Film fraternity send relief for victims; urges others too

‘God’s own country’ is experiencing one of its worst natural calamities in the century and like always Bollywood has come out in support of the victims and the state. Bollywood celebs like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan have donated hefty amounts for the state and have urged their fans on social media to do their bit as well.

Amitabh Bachchan took to twitter to express his grief over the incident and tell his fans to contribute for the victims. Bachchan also took to Twitter and tweeted, “The devastation caused by incessant rain in Kerala is frightening. Hundreds and thousands of our sisters and brothers are in deep anguish! We must do all we can to contribute as much as we can towards the needs of the people of Kerala. I have. You must too.”

Like his father, Abhishek Bachchan who will be next seen opposite Taapsee Pannu in ‘Manmarziyan’ expressed his grief on social media. “Tragic to see what is happening in Kerala floods. Please help in whatever way you can. Pray for Kerala,” tweeted Abhishek.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation has donated Rs 21 lakh to a relief group working for victims.

Race 3 actress Jacqueline Fernandes committed to donate Rs 5 lakh to NGO Habitat for Humanity India’s Kerala Flood Relief Programme. India TV quoted her saying, “I am deeply pained to see the devastation caused by the floods in Kerala. My heart goes out to the people in need and in order to help them, I have decided to donate to Habitat for Humanity India.”

The incessant rainfall in Kerala pains the heart of many. Hrithik Roshan went the extra mile by sending his team to provide assistance and help to the victims. Not just that, he also sent a cheque of an undisclosed amount. DNA quoted a source saying, “When Hrithik got to know about the disaster, he quietly sent across a few people from his team to get an understanding of all the help the victims and the state required. Though he was shooting for the last schedule of his film Super 30 in Mumbai, he kept in touch with them over the phone to take updates and act accordingly. He will continue to do so till the state recuperates.”

Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre who is battling high-grade cancer in New York also urged people to help as much as they can. She took to her Twitter handle and said, “My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the #KeralaFloods… let’s do everything we can to help them in this time of need.”

Sui-Dhaaga actress Anushka Sharma termed the destruction in Kerala as gut-wrenching and said , “Whatever we can do, we must. #Kerala Floods.” She also shared a picture with her fans which had the numbers of rescue helplines.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha actress Bhumi Pednekar also helped her fans to donate relief material for the victims. She shared a link on the micro-blogging site and wrote, “Hello all, Amazon India has started a service where you can donate necessities and products to 3 organisations helping with the Kerala Flood relief. If you have the will to help but can’t find a way, this will be of help. Please help. #keralafloods.”

Gold actor Akshay Kumar has also donated a hefty sum to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. His wife Twinkle Khanna tweeted, “We have done our bit and I would urge all of you to open your hearts and help the people of Kerala as much as possible.”

Karwaan actor Dulquer Salmaan also urged his fans to draw attention to Kerala on Twitter. “Urging and requesting the #nationalmedia to focus and draw attention to #keralafloods!! Each day is looking more grim for millions,” tweeted Salmaan.

Many others like Neha Dhupia also put up Instagram stories with information on how to donate for Kerala. Sonam K Ahuja and Vidya Balan have also donated for victims of Kerala.

Well, not just the Bollywood fraternity, but the Tamil and Malayalam film industry also came forward the help the victims. From the Tamil film industry, Surya, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Nayanthara and others not just contributed to the relief fund but also urged their fans to help and contribute in whichever way they can. Malayalam actors including Parvathy, Amala Paul and others were also on ground to help the victims.
