Carabao Cup: Hazard dazzles for Chelsea with a late winner; Arsenal, Tottenham win

Riding on a stunning late winner from Eden Hazard, Chelsea showed Liverpool the door in their Carabao cup clash at the Anfield stadium on Thursday.

After a barren first-half, Daniel Sturridge gave Liverpool the lead in the 58th minute, just after he missed an open goal.

Chelsea found the equaliser through Emerson Palmieri finish from a close-range in the 79th minute. However, the Blues had to wait for the VAR to intervene after the goal was initially ruled as being offside.

But it was the wonderful goal by the Belgian forward with five minutes remaining in the match that drew the maximum applause.

helsea assistant coach Gianfranco Zola heaped praise on the goal, calling Hazard one of the best in Europe and in the world.

It’s a fantastic goal. Not only the beauty of it but for the time he scored it,” Zola, as quoted by BCC Sport said.

“Not only is Hazard one of the best in the Premier League – if not the best – but he is one of the best in Europe and the world.

“In my opinion, we haven’t seen the best of him yet. He is remarkable,” he added further.

At the Emirates, it was a Danny Welbeck brace along with a superb effort from Alexandre Lacazette that sent Arsenal cruising through to the fourth round with a 3-1 win over Brentford.

Welbeck headed in a cross from French midfielder Matteo Guendounzi in the fifth minute and slotted another into the net in the 37th minute after Arsenal enjoyed a total period of domination in the first half.

After the break, Brentford’s Alan Judge reduced the deficit through a fine curling free-kick from a distance of 20 yards but Lacazette, who netted a fine goal against Everton in the Premier League last weekend restored Arsenal’s two-goal lead from a loose ball.

The Gunners could have had one more to their name but Alex Iwobi’s goal was ruled out as being offside.

Tottenham also made it to the next stage of the League Cup after knocking out Watford on penalties at the Stadium MK. Dele Alli scored a perfect penalty in the 86th minute equalised for the Spurs after Isaac had put Watford ahead 40 minutes earlier.

Eric Lamela’s 86th-minute strike was then levelled by Capoue three minutes later as the match headed into the penalties which Mauricio Pochettino’s side won 4-2.
