COVID-19 Spike: Government Takes Big Move Of Approving Foreign Vaccines In India

India emerged as one of the top COVID-19 vaccine producers. After the nationwide vaccination mission was kickstarted in January this year, health officials have also exported a large number of vaccines to neighboring nations. The Centre has now issued approval for the emergency use of foreign-produced COVID-19 vaccines in India. The decision has been taken after the Russian-made Covid vaccine Sputnik V has been passed by the Drugs Controller General of India for emergency use.

On Tuesday i.e April 13, the center speeded up its approval process for the foreign-produced vaccines. The decision commenced amidst the alarming spike of COVID-19 cases. India’s drug regulating body-Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted permission for emergency use of restricted vaccines whcih include USFDA, EMA, UK MHRA, PMDA Japan or which are listed in WHO.

As per the statement issued by the Union Health Ministry, “The National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19 (NEGVAC), after comprehensive deliberation, recommended that vaccines for Covid-19, which have been developed & are being manufactured in foreign countries and which have been granted emergency approval for restricted use by USFDA, EMA, UK MHRA, PMDA Japan or which are listed in WHO(Emergency Use Listing) may be granted emergency use approval in India, mandating the requirement of post-approval parallel bridging clinical trial in place of conduct of local clinical trial as per the provisions prescribed under Second Schedule of the New Drugs & Clinical Trials Rules 20190.”

For the unversed, India reported around 1,61,736 fresh COVID-9 in the last 24 hours. Around 97,168 discharges and 879 deaths as per the data issued by the Union Health Ministry
