Delhi: 11 of family commit mass suicide to attain salvation, suspect police

The national capital woke with a shocking news on Sunday morning. 11 members of the same family were found dead under my suspicious condition at their residence in Burari area of North Delhi. Among the dead, 10 bodies were found hanging with their mouth taped, eyes covered and hands tied with pieces of cloth cut from the same bedsheet, and a 77-year-old woman was found lying on the floor in another room.

Though the initial investigation signals towards a mass suicide, police probing the matter have said that they have found some handwritten notes ‘which points towards observance of some definite spiritual/ mystical practices by the whole family’, reports Indian Express.  According to the police these handwritten notes have strong similarity with the manner all member’s eyes, mouth, hand were taped and tied, added Additional DCP (North) Vinit Kumar.

The senior official said that police received a PCR call at around 7:30 am and they reached the spot, where there saw 11 people of the same family dead. Kumar said. “We reached the spot and found bodies of 11 people inside the two-storey building. Ten people were found hanging from an iron-mesh in the ceiling on the first floor, while the body of an old woman was found in the adjacent room.” Police later identified deceased as – mother Narayan Devi (77), sons Bhavnesh Bhatia (50) and Lalit Bhatia (45), daughters-in-law Savita Bhatia (48) and Teena Bhatia (42), daughter Pratibha (57), grandchildren Priyanka Bhatia (33), Nitu Bhatia (25), Monu Bhatia (23), Dhruv Bhatia (15) and Shivam Bhatia (15).

There were rumours that either the house was ransacked or the family had committed mass suicide due to debt issues, but police have recovered two registers which was a introduction guide to attain moksha (salvation). Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar said, “We have found two registers, with detailed written notes on how hands and legs are to be tied. The state in which 10 of the bodies were found reflected what was written in the notes. These are exhaustive notes, and we are studying .” The family, living in the vicinity for last two decades, ran a grocery shop and also had a plywood business.

An FIR has been been registered under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC at Burari police station, and the investigation has been transferred to the Crime Branch, said Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, reports IE. The senior official informed that they are waiting for FSL team’s report and autopsy report, after which they would be able to provide further details.
