Delhi: Woman held hostage by parents for five years, freed by DCW

After being kept hostage for five long years, a woman in Delhi has been freed by the Delhi Commission for Women, after her ex-husband dialled 181 woman helpline number.

According to a report published in India Today, the woman was held hostage since 2013. She had made an attempt to escape from her maternal home on October 23, but failed. However, she somehow managed to contact her ex-husband who then informed about it at the DCW 181 women helpline.

“DCW then called the local police station in Gurugram and the girl was rescued,” the official said.

The Gurugram court has ordered protection for them. DCW Chief Swati Maliwal said, “Strongest action should be taken against such parents.”

The woman will now be re-marrying her ex-husband. Her parents had earlier opposed to their inter-caste marriage, as reported in India Today.
