Federer is immortal, says predecessor Andre Agassi

Tennis great Andre Agassi described ‘timeless’ Roger Federer’s exploits even in the twilight of his career as ‘remarkable and unexplainable.’

“He gets more efficient it seems the older he gets, he seems timeless, it’s remarkable, unexplainable,” said Agassi who has won eight Grand Slam titles in a gleeful career and is considered by many to be ‘greatest tennis player of all time.’

Federer, 36, returned from a  six-month injury layoff to win consecutive Australian Open and a eight Wimbledon triumph to complete a record 20th Grand Slam title back in January.

The Swiss then opted to skip the clay-court season to prepare himself for this year’s Wimbledon, where he has already progressed to the second round after brushing aside Serbian Dusan Lajovic, 6-1 6-3 6-4 in just 79 minutes.

Favourite to win the Wimbledon for a record ninth time this season, Federer looks to be unstoppable as he marches his way in search of a 99th tournament triumph at the All England Club and Agassi was left perplexed and speechless when asked to explain the incredible achievements of the world No. 2.

The American said: “He is the favourite [to win Wimbledon] and watching him play, what is remarkable to me is how easy he makes it look after not competing for so long.

“It’s almost as if he doesn’t need to play tennis matches, it comes so natural for him. He makes it look easy, he has so many options, so as he gets older maybe if he loses half a step, it doesn’t change how he plays.”

Agassi who coached Novak Djokovic for about a year has always been a huge admirer of the Swiss magician and once said that he (Federer), “pisses him off” because of the manner in which he dominates opponents and wins points.

“I cannot believe how easy he (Federer) makes it look. It almost pisses me off that he just makes it look so easy. It’s a great generation of tennis. One that takes decades and makes it into one generation that everybody should be grateful to be able to watch,” the 1996 Olympic gold-medallist had said last year.
