Ganesha Chaturthi aka Vinayak Chaturthi will begin on Saturday, August 22, 2020. It is one of the most loved and awaited festivals in India that is loved by all, particularly Maharashtra. As the festival is just around the corner, devotees have started the preparations including the making of yummy delicacies in full swing.

As we all know, Lord Ganesha’s favorite sweet is Modak, which means sweet mini dumplings that are made of rice flour dough and filled with coconut and jaggery and are prepared in most homes. There are a number of different types of modaks that are available during the festival period. Without further ado, here are 5 modak recipes that you can make at home this Ganesh Chaturthi.

5 modak recipes which you can make at home:

Ukadiche Modak:

Recipe:

  • In a pan, add two cups of water with ghee and salt.
  • Add rice flour and stir. Cook for 3 minutes. Cover the pan and cool for 5 minutes. Add the ingredients.
  •  Knead into a soft dough, cover with a damp cloth.
  • Take the dough and roll it into a ball. Flatten the edges and shape them. Put 0one spoon of the filling onto the dough and seal it.
  •  Place the dumplings in a cloth and steam them for 15 minutes.
  •  Serve.

Ingredients:

  •  1 cup coconut (grated)
  • 1 cup jaggery
  • A pinch of nutmeg

Chocolate Modak:

Recipe:

  • Heat the pan. Keep the flame to a low and add grated mawa.
  • Keep stirring, soon the mawa would start melting.
  • Add sugar in the mawa mixture and stir for a minute.
  • Add chocolate chips.
  • Sprinkle cardamom powder.
  • Immediately transfer the mixture in another bowl/dish/thali.
  • Allow the mixture to cool, make them into the shape of modak
  • Garnish with rose petals, top with finely chopped pistachios.
  • Serve

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pistachios
  • 1/3 cup condensed milk
  • 3/4 cocoa or chocolate

Motichoor Modak:

Recipe:

  • Sieve the besan. Add salt, orange food color, and ghee.
  • Make them into a batter.
  • Heat the oil, add the baking soda & mix.
  • Pour the batter in the pan to make small boondi. Fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add cardamom powder and mix.
  • Heat sugar & water in the pan.
  • Take the modak mould, grease them with ghee lightly, fill in the boondis.
  • Garnish with pistachio.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cup gram flour (besan)
  • Ghee
  • 2 pinch baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon green cardamom
  • Orange food color

Rava Modak:

Recipe:

  • Mix the powdered jaggery with the coconut in a pan.
  • Cook until the jaggery filling starts to dry up. Allow cooling.
  • Take water in a pan. Add some oil and salt in it.
  • Add rava to the boiling water. Mix them well.
  • Stir for 5 to 6 minutes and switch off the flame. Let it dry
  • Now, make the rava mold and add the jaggery filling in it.
  • Serve.

Ingredients: 

  • 2 cups rava.
  • 2 cups grated coconut
  • Jaggery as required.
  • Cardamoms
  • Oil or ghee
  • Salt

Rose Modak:

Recipe:

  •  1/2 cup- rice flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup grated Coconut
  •  1/3 cup Sugar
  • 2 drops rose essence
  • 2 drops rose food color

Ingredients:

  •  In a pan, add the grated coconut and sugar. Cook until the sugar melts.
  • Add the food color, mix it thoroughly.
  • Add the rice flour in a bowl, add the salt and sesame oil, mix it.
  • In a pan, add water, flour, and mix.
  • Kneed the dough and mold it accordingly.
  • Once the modak is ready, place it on the steamer basket and steam for 10 mins.
  • Serve.
