Root who became the 15th English player and fourth fastest to reach 6000 Test runs was run-out by Kohli while trying to steal two-runs off Ravichandran Ashwin. The Indian skipper picked up the ball and knocked the stumps down with a direct hit, before giving the English captain a mic-drop send-off.

It was in all probability a reply to Root who had done a similar thing after guiding England to a 2-1 series victory over India two-weeks ago.

Earlier, the England captain who made 80 off 156 balls overtook the likes Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook to become the fourth fastest English player after Wally Hammond, Len Hutton and Kern Barrington to reach 6000 Test runs.

A boundary off spinner Ashwin saw the 27-year-old achieve the milestone in his 127th Test innings. He is, however, the fastest to reach the landmark in terms of time taken as he achieved the feat within five years and 231 days of his debut overtaking the record of former captain Cook who achieved the mark in five years and 339 days.

Don Bradman who required just 68 innings to achieve the feat leads the list. Yet, it took the Australian more than 19 years to reach the mark in his 45th Test match.

Test matches those days were very few and far in between in comparison to today where a team like England are currently paying their 100th Test march.

England finished the day on 285-runs for the loss of nine wickets. Root was the highest run-getter while Jonny Baristow chipped with a 70 from 88 balls. Ashwin with four wickets was the chief partnership breaker for India, while Mohammad Shami also took wickets.
