Throwback: When Karan Johar mistook EXO’s Kai fans cheering for him

Kpop has become a global phenomenon now and many Indian’s love to watch Kdramas as well as songs by Kpop idols. Back in 2018, Karan Johar got an opportunity to meet EXO member Kai at an event in Paris and spilled the beans on how he took a selfie with the singer. The filmmaker went through an embarrassing moment after he mistook Kai’s fans were cheering at him. However, he later realized that there was no one in the crowd to cheer him.

While talking to Janice on Social Media Star, Karan recalled, “I was inundated with messages like ‘Kai, this K-pop star from EXO, is attending the show, you gotta take a selfie, you gotta take a selfie, you gotta take a selfie and I was like, I kid you not, there were at least 3,000 mentions and I was inundated, like I was with Reshma, as in Reshma Shetty (celebrity manager), I was like ‘Reshma, who is this person?’ K-pop I had heard of upar upar se, I had no idea about the teenage craziness.”

The filmmaker confesses searching for the idol among the massive crowd. Leaving the event they went outside and stunned to see the crowd cheering and screaming outside. Shelling details about the most embarrassing part, KJo said, “I was like, ‘You know Reshma, there are a lot of people who have seen Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in Paris and that’s why this crowd is screaming.’ She says, ‘Karan this is not for you. I went there, she tapped him, he was very sweet, he said, ‘Yes, yes, I know,’ because he was also sent the same kind of, he had read the same thing on social media. Very sweetly we chatted and he clicked this selfie and that is how this happened.”

Reportedly, Karan Johar was keen on taking a selfie with Kai because many people on his Instagram had requested to do so. After meeting the idol, he even posted the picture on his official handle.
