La Liga: Andre Silva scores a brace as Sevilla thrash Real Madrid 3-0
Andra Silva scored twice while Luka Modric had a goal disallowed as Sevilla thrashed Real Madrid 3-0 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Wednesday.
Portuguese Silva scored two inside 21 minutes, first converting a Jesus Navas cross in the 17th minute, before netting from a rebound five minutes later after Navas’ shot was saved.
It was Real’s first league defeat this season under new manager Julen Lopetegui as they missed out on a golden opportunity to break into the top, with defending champion Barcelona also suffering a shock 1-2 defeat to Leganes.
Real had 21 shots but only Gareth Bale came close to scoring when his shot hit the post. Wissam Ben Yedder then volleyed home a third in the 39th minute to settle the game for his side after Franco Vazquez had nearly managed with a similar volley minutes earlier.
The visitors were wasteful in front with both Bale and World’s Best Male Player Luka Modric missing open chances up front. Modric even had a goal cancelled for offside in the second half.
“We didn’t play as we wanted and we paid for it in the first half, conceding two goals in quick succession. We came here with a plan of pressing them and we didn’t do it as we’d have liked to, that’s clear,” said Lopetegui after the defeat.
“In the second half, we matched them for play and had chances but couldn’t score. In the end, you can say it was a very bad performance from us and a very good one from Sevilla.”
“We have to pick ourselves up, we have another important game in three days so we congratulate Sevilla and recognise we have not played how we wanted.”
Real are currently placed second in the points table with 13 points after six matches, the same as Barcelona. They play Atletico Madrid in the derby on Sunday.
