Maharashtra: Swine Flu claims 302 lives so far this year

Days after infectious Swine Flu (H1N1) killed more than 190 people in Rajasthan, the health epidemic has affected Maharashtra too. As per the state surveillance officer, at least 302 deaths have been reported in Maharashtra so far this year due to swine flu.

Talking to ANI, Maharashtra’s state surveillance officer said, “302 deaths reported in the state this year due to swine flu while 325 people are still in hospitals, 22-23 are on ventilator.” The official further advised people to visit doctor immediately if they experience a flu-like symptom. “The most number of cases of swine flu has been reported from Nashik, Pune and Satara,” he added.

However, in last week, the Maharashtra government said that 268 people had died due to swine flu in the state between January and October this year and 32 people were on ventilator support. It also released guidelines for the treatment of swine flu patients.

Notably, there are around 2,300 people infected with swine flu in Maharashtra and 60 percent of the swine flu patients hail from rural areas. Swine flu has killed patients in the 41-50 year age group.

It is to be known that there were atleast 1,652 cases of swine flu reported in Rajasthan till September 30, as per the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) data. “A total of 4,484 positive swine flu cases were recorded in the country and 353 deaths occurred during the period,” as per the data.
