Mumbai: 30-year-old man arrested for sexually abusing seven-year-old niece

A 30-year-old man was arrested by the Vakola police on July 27 on account of a complaint lodged by the mother of his seven-year-old niece for allegedly sexually abusing her when the child’s parents were away from home. The victim’s mother witnessed the accused touching her daughter inappropriately when she returned home on July 26.

The incident occurred in the evening on July 26 when the accused, who resided in the same vicinity as the family of the victim, learned that the girl was alone and hence decided to pay her a visit.

“Fortunately for the victim, the girl’s mother walked in on the act when she returned home. Finding her daughter being touched inappropriately, she raised an alarm following which the accused fled. She then approached us and filed a complaint,” a police official stated.

The victim was sent for a medical examination after a case was registered under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

A police team that was then sent to the locality to nab the accused after the complaint as he was already identified by the victim and her mother. Police then learned that the accused had fled the spot but was nabbed a day later from Pune. “While investigating his whereabouts, we learned that he had taken a train from Santacruz. Later, we figured he may have gone to Pune following which a team was sent there. He was arrested on Friday and was produced in court which remanded him in police custody for three days,” the police official added.

Recently, in Punjab on July 20 a minor had claimed through a sensitization class that she had been sexually exploited by her 22-year-old brother and her mother initially took her to a ‘tantrik’ as she believed that the girl was hallucinating. The girl then confided in her friend who told the teachers and the school lodged a complaint with the police.
