The government has directed all service providers to ban more than 800 adult websites. According to a PTI report, the move was taken following an order by the Uttarakhand High Court.

The order came on September 28, in their ruling, the Bench had said that if any ISP failed to ban adult content, then their license will be snatched, and they would be asked to stop their services.

As per Section 25 of the Information Technology Act 2000, the license of ISPs can be terminated.

“Unlimited access to these pornographic sites is required to be blocked (or) curbed to avoid an adverse influence on the impressionable minds of children,” the bench had said in their ruling.

According to the report, only Reliance Jio had implemented this order so far, and has already banned all adult websites. Some users are talking about shifting to Airtel and Vodafone to access such adult content, but soon, they would too ban these websites.

Many popular adult sites have already been blocked on many networks, but it seemed that Jio users are the worst hit. They complained bitterly on Reddit and Twitter that they cannot access any adult websites any longer.

While some thought the decision was archaic and criticised the government move, others took solace in humour. With #pornban, social media has been flooded with memes and GIFs, particularly people are seen taking a dig at Jio customers.

In an order issued to Department of Telecom, MeiTY said, “All the internet service licensees are instructed to take immediate necessary action for blocking of 827 websites as per the direction from Meity and for the compliance of the Hon’ble High Court order.”

Besides India, China too has completely banned adult websites. Last month, 4000 websites with adult content were banned, all across China. In total, more than 22,000 websites have faced a ban in China, over this issue.
