Coming on the back of the five successive wins in the competition, Maurizio Sarri’s men were the absolute favourites to win the match. But West Ham, who showed some life in their last match against Everton fought hard to secure a point from the match.
French forward Olivier Giroud won the battle with Spain’s Alvaro Morata for a place in the starting XI and Sarri’s men were dominant when they had the ball -they had 70 per cent of the ball possession in the first half. Against the run of play, West Ham could have easily grabbed a lead in the first 30 minutes but Antonio’s shot wet over after he received a pass from Felipe Anderson.
This brought the visitors on their toes and their new goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga pulled off a fine save from Andriy Yarmolenko.
Chelsea had an opportunity to take the lead after N’Golo Kante’s header just went wide of the goal guarded by Lukasz Fabianski. The home side looked to be a constant threat when they had the ball at their feet with Felipe Anderson and Yarmalenko threatening to break the deadlock.
Giroud couldn’t really make much of an impact on the game and was subbed off with Morata coming in his place who, came closer to giving the visitors the lead minutes later. But Fabianski once again came to the rescue as he pulled off a spectacular save to deny the Blues.
With 13 minutes left in the match Ukrainian Yarmalenko had the best opportunity to give West Ham a 1-0 lead but his headed shot just went wide after he received a cross from Robert Snodgrass. West Ham custodian Fabianski  stood out in the last few minutes of the match after he made a left dive to stop Ross Barkley’s shot from going in.
