The party’s stand came out of the growing speculation surrounded by pan-Indian mahagatbandhan that is grand alliance to take on the BJP in 2019.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, Speaking to the CNN-IBN, had ruled out the possibility of a grand alliance, saying it was not “practical”.

“As per my assessment, it will be a State-wise position. There might be States like Tamil Nadu, where the number one party will be the DMK… If you go to Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, you will find that the Congress there will be the number one party…,” he added.

Congress media in-charge Randeep Surjewala said, “Alliances need to be sewed up State-to-State. There can be no one-size- fits-all alliance. Every State has regional parties. Just to site an example, NCP and Congress are in alliance in Maharashtra and talks are on to finalise it. But it can’t be transposed to Gujarat for we feel that in Gujarat we don’t need an alliance. We have again decided to fight the elections in Bihar with the RJD. But the same alliance will not work in U.P.”

There are many senior leaders including Trinamool Congress’s Mamata Banerjee who are strong players when it comes to the opposition giving though fight, with comments saying they would not want to work under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, a relative political neophyte. It’s likely to be seen that the over all situation is in favor of the Congress with comments.
