Series A: Juventus down AC Milan amidst Gonzalo Higuain’s controversy

Gonzalo Higuain had a time to forget against his former side as he missed a penalty and was also shown a red card in Juventus’ 2-0 win over AC Milan in the Serie A on Sunday.

The Argentine striker, had arrived at Milan from Juventus as part of a deal where Leonardo Bonucci headed back to Turin this summer before the season kicked off.

A header from Mario Mandzukic had given Juventus the lead as early as in the eighth minute and their second came way back towards the end of the game when Cristiano Ronaldo, who replaced the 30-year old Higuan at Juve, netted the second for his side.

Two minutes later, the drama in the match unfolded when Higuain was shown a yellow for his foul on Juve defender Mehdi Benatia.

He soon received a second booking for showing dissent to the referee as he shouted on him.

This win would give Juventus some confidence after they were left stunned 1-2 by Manchester United in the Champions League days ago. Courtesy this victory, the Italian champions opened up a six-point lead at the top of the Serie A table ahead of second-placed Napoli.

Milan meanwhile are at the fifth position, 12 points behind.

Higuain nonetheless apologized for his actions wherein he stated that the foul was committed by Benatia.

“First of all I want to apologize with my team-mates and with the fans. The referee knows what I told him, he should have understood the situation. The successive reaction is my responsibility,” he said, while speaking to Sky Sports.

“I think Benatia committed the foul in first place. But the referee said I fouled him and he gave me a yellow card. I’ve already apologized.”

“We can all make mistakes, I am not a robot even if this is no explanation for what I did. I have great memories of Juve and I have a great relationship with my former team-mates,” he added.
