Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan’s views on Bollywood remixing old classics

Latest Bollywood releases had set out a trend of having one remix track, pictured in movie from old classics. Most of us listen to this recreated songs and prove that the experiment works for new generation who may have or may not have heard the previous version. But the question which still bugs us is that, what is the reason behind remixing these old classics instead of creating new compositions?

Let’s try to find out the reason behind this intention. Take for example “Laila Main Laila”, “The Humma Song”, “Ek Do Teen” or even the latest tracks like “Dilbar” from Satyameva Jayate. Don’t you feel, we listen to these songs numerous times knowingly or unknowingly.

Recently in an interview with The Indian Express singer Sunidhi Chauhan said, “If you are going to retain just one line and the rest of it is new, then you just might do a good original song. Why do you mix it? Then it is not here, not there, it is a mixed feeling.” Even though the well known singer commented her opinion not in favor of the trend, her latest song ‘Mohabbat’ in Fanney Khan has already entered in the top list of trending songs.

Further the singer continued saying, “I will be happier if we give the listeners original music because it can never get the kind of recognition, the original stuff got. And that way, we are also discouraging new people who are working so hard in making original melodies. All the remixes sound the same, unfortunately. So, I am okay with songs being recreated, but it should be in the right manner and the right taste.” So does that mean Sunidhi is being hypocritical by not standing by her view of creating original music and opting for the options offered to her which are remakes.

Coming to Sonu Nigam, he accepted the fact that Bollywood composers are taking shortcut by the support of old compositions but from his comments, one can make out that he is open to the trend without judging it. He said,”I have some Rafi Sahab songs in Fanney Khan, but that was at a very special request from Mr. Anil Kapoor. There is a situation of genuine justification and the best part is the original form of the song hasn’t been tampered with.”

Further he added, “I am basically not the kind of person who judges any trend or who suggests that things should be done a certain way, that I feel is appropriate. Having said that, I do agree that by recreating old super hit songs the makers today are choosing a shortcut.”

But when Sunidhi was asked about her professional aspect towards the trend she answered saying, “That’s what is happening 50 per cent of the time. Obviously, I will not refuse. But if they are asking for my happiness then I will be like, ‘I am okay, but I am not kicked about it.” After going through her final comment, it seems that sometimes your profession makes you hypocritical.
