Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall alert; schools closed in 7 districts

After heavy rainfall alert in Tamil Nadu, the state government has ordered for schools to remain closed in seven districts of the state, including Chennai. Due to a well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, Chennai and its neighbouring districts experienced heavy rain on Wednesday.

The Chennai collector has declared a holiday for all schools as well as colleges today. Even Madras University has cancelled its exams scheduled for today.

A statement from Madras University read, “Due to heavy rains in Chennai and its surrounding Madras University cancels exams scheduled on 22nd November. Rescheduled date for this exam will be announced soon.”

The statement further mentioned, “Exams conducted by the University Departments on 22nd November 2018 are also cancelled.”

According to a report from the MET office, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy showers are likely over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next two days. Other than Chennai, it also rained heavily in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Villupuram districts too.

E Palaniswami- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, will be briefing Prime Minister Narendra Modi today about the devastation caused by Cyclone Gaja and seek a comprehensive central assistance to tide over the situation.

Recently, Cyclone Gaja killed 46 in Tamil Nadu after it recently hit the coast in Nagapattinam, leaving a trail of destruction in over 10 districts.

In November last year, heavy rain lashed Chennai, bringing the city to a near standstill.
