Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat on Thursday tied the knot with long-time boyfriend and fellow wrestler Somvir Rathee.

The couple got married in a private ceremony in Vinesh’s hometown Charkhi Dadri, Haryana. Reports claim that had got engaged in August when Somvir proposed Vinesh at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, following her return from the Jakarta Asian Games where she became the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at any Asian Games.

Meanwhile, news has emerged that the couple decided to take eight vows together instead of the regular seven – the eighth being a promise to each other to rake up the cause of female foeticide in Haryana. “Beti Bachao, beti padhao, beti khilao (save daughters, teach daughters and to let them play,” was the eighth vow Vinesh and Somvir took.
