WhatsApp backs up your chat and media data inside your phone storage rather than dedicating it to a separate server. To avoid this, WhatsApp and Google have come to an agreement that as of 12 November, the messaging app backups will no longer be eating into your Google’s cloud storage space.

Despite being a Facebook service, all your WhatsApp media, text, memos and more are usually automatically backup up over your Google account on Android.

The information was confirmed by XDA- Developers. Several users have already started receiving an email confirming the same. The email also added that the data which is stored in the phone over a year will be automatically deleted.

Unlike other mainstream messaging services, WhatsApp stores all the media and chat data in the phone storage rather than on dedicated servers. Backing up WhatsApp data is essential since you are quite likely to switch mobile phones and backing up chats and media on the cloud helps you restore it to a new device.

On Apple devices, iCloud offers 5 GB of free space for WhatsApp backups.

On a related note, Google has announced a storage plan called ‘Google one plan’ which provide 100 GB of storage and can go to 30TB and beyond. The plan starts out at a minimum of Rs 130 a month.
